Parenzana: Istria’s Adventure Trail

The Parenzana, known in Italian as Parenzana and in Slavic countries as Porčanka, was a narrow-gauge railway connecting Trieste and Poreč (Porech). It was built in 1902 to develop the internal regions of Istria.  Its length was 123 kilometers, passing through Trieste, Koper, Piran.

Originally, there were plans to extend it to Kanfanar, Pazin, and Rovinj, but due to lack of funds, these plans were never realized. The terrain the railway passed through was beautiful but hilly and rugged. The highest point was Grožnjan (293 meters above sea level). Therefore, the route featured numerous engineering structures, including 8 tunnels totaling 1530 meters, 11 bridges, and 6 viaducts, as well as stations, workshops, water pumps, and more. The trains consisted of passenger cars of three classes, as well as freight and luggage cars. The maximum speed was around 30 km/h, often slower on inclines.

For many years, the railway served the locals, facilitating trade in products such as wine and oil and serving as a crucial means of communication for many areas.

For many years, the railway served the locals, facilitating trade in products such as wine and oil and serving as a crucial means of communication for many areas. However, with the development of roads and automobile transportation, the narrow-gauge railway could no longer compete. In 1935, Mussolini's government decided to dismantle it and transport it to Africa for military purposes, but the transport carrying it sank in the Mediterranean Sea before reaching its destination. However, memories of the legendary railway persisted. In 2002, on the centenary of the railway, the governments of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia decided to revive it, given its picturesque route and the preservation of much of its infrastructure. They aimed to attract tourists to the area. Parenzana: Istria’s Adventure Trail
